Kitchen door handles actually serve two purposes and both of them should meet with your approval before they should be purchased.

The first of these is their functional quality which is actually the primary reason for buying them. You might find the most gorgeous door handles that you think are simply to die for but when you try to use them to open a kitchen door you might find they hurt your fingers or, even worse that your fingers don’t even fit comfortably under the handles to use them. Down the track this annoyance is going to become a larger issue and if it’s annoying for you as the person who bought them just imagine how frustrating it is going to be for others.

The second purpose you are going to buy a particular kitchen door handle is to improve the aesthetic quality of the kitchen or, at the very worst, not to detract from it. The most functional handles in the world are going to lower the value of your kitchen if they look plain ugly. There is such a large range of handles and knobs available that there really is no excuse for not getting some that match with the rest of the room.

All of these cautions aren’t to say that you shouldn’t be creative. In fact some of the finest results in striking kitchen renovations have come from mixing contrasting styles or textures between kitchen doors and kitchen door handles. A contrasting colored handle against a plain door front could add a vibrant splash in what might otherwise be a dangerously dull color scheme.

If you start with wooden handles your choices begin with wooden knobs before you move on to a range of chromes, polished brass, stainless steel, glass, nickel or iron plate. You’ve got to decide whether you want a door knob or a handle, the look will obviously be different and one may suit a contemporary kitchen while another might be more appropriate for a country kitchen.

If you are refacing your kitchen doors rather than replacing them with new ones and part of this process was going to be new door handles, you will have to ensure that the new handles have the same drill holes as the previous ones. If they don’t you will be left with extra holes in the door that will be uncovered and will have to be repaired and masked.

There is a further tip to take note of when buying your doors and handles. Don’t only buy exactly the number that you will need to immediately fit to your doors. It’s inevitable that at some point a handle or knob is going to break or be damaged in some way. When this happens you will want to have a spare on hand that matches the remainder exactly and rather than heading to the shops hoping that the line hasn’t been discontinued. It is much simpler to just pull out one of the spares and screw it in.

Often times the problem with buying new kitchen door handles isn’t so much lack of a choice as it is too much of a choice. If you’re not sure what you want you’re going to have real problems. Try matching your handles with the appliances that are going in the kitchen. If that doesn’t work have a good look around at other people’s kitchens and try to decide what seems to work and what doesn’t. Avoiding other people’s mistakes is a very handy way of succeeding at choosing the right kitchen door handles.
